about

"The album draws on these friends' easy camaraderie to create a kitchen-party vibe in which the multi-talented players act as backing band for each other, trading off instruments as each songwriter gets a chance to showcase his or her material. While there's a complementary old-timey feel to all five's songs, each brings something slightly different to the mix." - EYE TORONTO

"The lineup is nothing less than stellar - five different yet complementary songwriters hailing from a truckload of respected bands playing each others' songs as a group, trading up time in the spotlight and swapping instruments." - SEE MAGAZINE

Inspired by Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue, Kate Maki invited Ruth Minnikin, Dale Murray, Ryan Levecque, and Nathan Lawr to tour across Canada in the winter of 2005 as a travelling band of singing songwriters known as "A Midwinter Night's Dream". From coast to coast, they took turns as lead singer while the others acted as back up on drums, bass, guitar, piano, organ, pedal steel, accordion, banjo, harmonica, and harmonies. Before the self-booked 20 date tour, a ten song album was recorded live off the floor in one day, packaged in hand-drawn, handmade sleeves, and sold exclusively off stage. The album sold out on tour, but is now available here for download.
